"Adaptation to Climate Change through Sustainable Forest Management Program: Supporting the implementation of Joint Forest Management schemes in Baljuvon district, Khatlon Province, Tajikistan”

Target area

Afardi, Boghi zoghon, Chashmasor and Dashti gulho villages, Baljuvon districts, Khatlon region

Goal

To build the capacity of local forestry departments and the people of Baljuvon district to apply the JFM approach as a tool for climate change adaptation and sustainable use of natural resources.

Specific objectives

·  Practical implementation of the JFM approach in 2-4 communities in Baljuvon district, building on previous and ongoing successful experiences in various regions of Tajikistan.

·  Improving understanding of the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders in the JFM system and highlighting the importance of the JFM approach for preventing forest degradation and conserving biodiversity.

Results

·  5 women out of 18 representatives of FDs’ departments from Baljuvon and Sari Khosor communities has participated in round table on sharing project results, assessing threats and opportunities, and future planning and collaboration. 

·  From the six pre-selected villages, Afardi, Bogi Zogon, Dashti Gulho and Chashmasor were selected and 34 farmers were contracted for the final implementation of the pilot project, under which 246.1 ha were covered under the JFM scheme.

·  Two exploratory visits to exchange experience were organized for 14 JFMs’ staff (of which 4 women) in Khovaling and for 8 FD’s staff in Penjikent districts.

·  A total of 63 women out of 435 participants completed a four-component capacity building training for FDs’ staff and target group representatives, which was jointly developed and delivered by the involved NGO Camp Tabiat and the State Agrarian University.

·  169 staff from two FDs’ and representatives from four communities has participated in information sessions on JFM approach, project objectives and activities.
