Climate adaptation through sustainable forestry in important river catchment areas in Tajikistan.

Target area

Farkhor, Khovaling, Vanj districts and GBAO

Goal

Raising the аwаrепеss of local population and the capacity of the staff of the fоrеst dерагtmепt and the pгоtесtеd aгеаs оп values of biodiversity, as well as about the thгeats and оррогtuпitiеs fог сопsегvаtiоп of wildlife and ecosystem rеstоrаtiоп.

Specific objectives

·     Collection and analysis of basic preliminary data on the condition of pastures and forests (management, problems, etc.) in the target area.

·     Identification and direct engagement of relevant stakeholders to participate in and contribute to project activities.

·     Raising public awareness of the project, sustainable development concepts (JFM, SPP), and approaches to climate change adaptation.

·     Establishment of public groups, such as JFM, SPP, interest groups, and women's groups at the community level.

·     Signing agreements on the use of JFM sites between target public groups and forestry enterprises or other relevant authorities.

·     Joint development of F/PMP and JFM plans, as well as investment plans, with target groups.

·     Improving communication between community user groups and stakeholders (forestry enterprises and jamoats).

·     Building the capacity of target group members through thematic workshops and exchange visits.

Results

·     Basic preliminary data on pasture and forest situation (management, problem etc.)  in 7 target districts were gathered and analysed in close collaboration with local stakeholders.

·     Six interest groups (55 women out of 133 people) were created in areas such as pasture management, forest fruit drying, joint forest management, beekeeping, a group to attract foreign tourists, and a group for collecting medicinal herbs.

·     Schoolchildren and local communities raised awareness about biodiversity conservation.

·     354 JFM groups were organized (Baljuvon – 35 units, Farkhor – 62 units, Vanch – 78 units, and Khovaling – 179 units).

·     9,363 hectares of the total JFM area were covered by afforestation and reforestation activities.

·     354 project participants participated in trainings on various topics related to forest protection and restoration.

·     38 small-scale projects and innovative pasture management measures were implemented, including a mini-solar system, construction of a cat pen, creation of a drinking water supply system on the pasture, landscaping, construction of a cattle bridge, and support for shepherds with tents.

·     34 small-scale projects and innovative measures for participatory forest management were implemented, including a mini-solar system, tools and equipment, fencing, and improved forage production.

·     8 small-scale projects and incentive measures were implemented for women's groups engaged in fruit processing and dairy production.
