Project title 25

Transformative conservation agriculture in the Ishkashim region

Target area

Ishkashim district, GBAO

Goal

To promote soil and water conservation in the Ishkashim border region through climate-smart irrigation and horticulture, and improve food security and income opportunities for hundreds of smallholder agricultural producers.

Specific                 objectives

·   Thirty hectares of new agricultural land will be irrigated using soil- and water-saving precision irrigation technology, guaranteeing each tree seedling the required amount of water in accordance with current regulations.

·  At least 20 hectares of the new irrigated land will be used for orchards protected from stray animals. Along with modern commercial varieties, at least 20% of the seedlings in the orchards will contain either traditional local varieties or traditional varieties specifically adapted to local climatic conditions.

·  At least 100 farmers will be trained in resource-saving fruit growing, integrated pest management, and efficient water use.

Results

·   A drip irrigation system using water-saving technologies based on FAO standards was installed on 30 hectares of new agricultural land.

·   Orchards with 9,415 seedlings were planted on 30 hectares of newly irrigated land, protected by fencing to prevent stray animals.

·   250 farmers (18% women) participated in training sessions on orchard establishment and agricultural practices, installation and maintenance of drip irrigation systems, and integrated and biological pest management.
